To Mom & Dad: Sorry I Haven't Had Time to Post in more than a MONTH!

Hello friends & family,

It's been a crazy month indeed. And because i'm running on 3 hours of sleep today, this will be as brief an update as possible.

First, haven't really had time to watch many films recently... But been catching up with quite a few TV Series in between film work, work and uni work. INTENSE i tell you!!

Where to start... Well, ok, picking up where i left off... EXPERIMENTAL FILM SHOOT WEEK.
- all went well, like i've said before, i'm blessed to be part of such a cooperative and well-rounded group. All our shoots went well, despite the nutty hours of like starting at 5am and ending at roughly 3pm or something... I can barely remember. We basically stuck to the hours booked out for studio time. Now we're in the post-production process of editing.... Argh... how i hate AVID!!! It's too complicated and non-user-friendly. They should teach us Final Cut Pro instead... But AVID is the "industry standard".... crap. Anyway, hopefully this is the last time i have to cut my own film together... I'm more of a hands-on person and i love being on set... LOVE it... In my opinion, that's the best part of making a film, but it's just my personal opinion. Other people that love the pre- or post-prod stuff are entitled to their own opinions and reasons. But anyway... Experimental shoot week was fun. Let's just say i haven't been on set in awhile since Feb doing that Deep Blue doco/showreel/behind-the-scenes stuff for Killian (dir.).

- anyway, on Monday (Alana's shoot day for experimental), i couldn't help out even though she did a terrific job D.P-ing for me, cos i had a music video to camera assist and light assist at an ice skating rink! It was another one of those early starts... like 5am type things, cos we had to be done and out of there by 1pm (the time we paid for to buy out the whole rink). This was truly an experience because i've never filmed on an ice rink before and it was quite tricky (slippery ice) so the set ups were slower than usual. Great fun though. We shot on HD. Looked gooooood. This is another Killian job... he's really making it! And he's in 3rd year, still at uni... He did the recent Claire Bowditch (is that how you spell it? not familiar with her face or her music, but she's pretty big in the land of Oz) music clip. Killian then approached me after the shoot and said there could be 2 more videos coming up if he gets them (he has to pitch ideas to the bands first)--one would be a Living End clip and the other another Claire Bowditch one. This'll be this month, but haven't heard much yet and i'm swamped with uni work, so we'll see...

- two weekends ago, i was production assistant on a Qpix film titled Carnies... Production is not really the department of film i wanna go into, but Tim Marshall, 3rd year student who's already got a full-time job, asked me to be his assistant and he's a friend... so i said yes, and any film work (though unpaid) is better than working at bloody Subway. Anyway, the shoot was 5 days (Thurs-Mon), but due to production costs for accommodation when they shot up at Jondaryon and Gold Coast, i only joined for the last 2 studio days... which is fine by me cos i had a presentation on Friday. I initially emailed my tutor asking to push it back, she reluctantly did so, but then after Tim told me they wouldn't need me til Sunday, i had to take back what i said and do my presentation on Friday. The presentation was formative so i wasn't too stressed about it, though i must honestly say it's the least amount of work i've put into a presentation and it's the worst one i've done to date. We'll see what formative grade i get by this Friday. Didn't miss any classes, so it's all good.

- and finally, this weekend, i was on a four day shoot that started on Sat and ended just last night. This is another Qpix film, but different crew of course. And because while i was on Carnies, i bumped into crew members from Kavit's set--Rich (clapper loader and 3rd yr uni student this yr) and Tfer and Michael (soundies), they approached me for this one, except that because these shoots are less professional, i had to take on jobs from both departments and trust me, this is the first and the last time. On this Qpix film titled My Little King (about a Chinese family, written by a Chinese woman, shot in Chinatown), i was both Video split operator (camera dept) and sound assistant (sound dept). Like i've said before, i ultimately want to go into camera stuff and at this point, this is a transition for me from sound to camera... This will hopefully be the last time i do sound... Not that i don't love it or that i don't love Tfer and Michael, but it's just priorities and Rich (my senior and you can say...trainer) says that i have to make a choice and stick to it because it's all about appearances in this industry (even though we are behind the camera), if people see you as a soundie on one shoot then doing a camera role in the next, they will automatically assume you don't know as much... and that is a fair point. So i will have to decline any sound jobs i get... too bad i'm not THAT into sound... If not this'd be perfect... Anyway, nothing's easy... just gotta keep climbing that hierarchy. Exciting stuff!! Doing this shoot i missed only an hour of lecture because i had to catch up with sleep if not i'd be even more dis-functional than i have been today. The four days of shoots were more night shoots and the hours were on average something like 3.30pm-5am. So you can imagine, i lived like a bat for four days, sleeping when the sun was almost up and waking up when the sun was going to set... But these is the kind of life i will have to get use to... and in a way, it's extremely fulfilling-- i mean both the crazy hours and the work. If you don't understand why the hours are this way, please ask me the next time you see me, i've already typed out more than i intended. Haha. Anyway, the only thing i feel really bad about is not being able to call Shannon on his birthday to wish him and instead only sent an sms... i was on set and he was travelling with his Kendo club... i know... i'm crap... So here's a shout out: Happy Belated 23rd!!

-today (14th May) has been quite different from my normal uni days... reason being that i got home at like 4.30am after we wrapped and went over to the D.P's house for some beer (i only had 1 because they insisted and i only went cos they insisted... i wanted to go home!!) and by the time i took a shower and dried my hair, slept around 5am... Class at 9am this morning, and well what do you know? I woke up at 9am sharp... Didn't hear the alarm that was set at 8.30am... Anyway, i'm 15 mins late to class, no big deal, it's just a lecture about a unit we'll be doing next sem called Multi-Cam, TV studio based stuff. I wore glasses today instead of contacts... cos my eyes would definitely NOT be able to take it. Haha... I showed up with bed head, glasses and pillow marks on my cheek... Reina said, "you look like you just woke up..." Haha... Anyway, i can't run on less than 7 hours sleep, my ideal night's rest would be 8 hours... But the things we do for the stuff we love... 3 hours sleep and i've been running on close-to-empty since... Almost fell asleep in front of the com 2 hours earlier while i was checking my email. Then decided to go take a shower and now i'm blogging while eating microwaved chicken and sweet corn soup. Bad news is that my sore throat started this morning and i've been flu-ish for the past 2 weeks... I knew it!! Getting sick alright... My immune system is pretty much NOT PRESENT. Yes mom, will take soluble Vit C and Clarinase or Rinafort.

Then after class ended early at about 11.30am as opposed to 2pm after a 1 hour break from 11-12pm, i went to capture this shitty little video i shot which is less than 30 secs with Suba (Kannan's cool fiance who's now moved to Brisbane) being "taken over" by cartoony-comic type thing... which i will achieve by rotoscoping. This is a time-based assignment for the vis arts unit i'm doing called 2D Media and Processes. Anyway, i captured the footage and tomorrow morning i'm meeting with my lecturer who will run me through what i missed on Tuesday's lecture and give me some direction for my rotoscoping project. Anyone seen A Scanner Darkly?? If you haven't and you don't know what rotoscoping is... that's the best example i can give you. It's truly amazing... I won't be able to do that because i don't have access to the complicated, advanced softeware they used to generate that, but i'll be doing something similar in a much smaller scale. Haha... Extremely smaller scale. And because i'm doing this time-based media instead of the other two choices: printmaking or multiples... I didn't have studio today that i'd normally have from 2-5pm. I went last week for the printmaking one even though that's not what i'm doing because i've never done it before and uni's the time to try and experience as much, since my parents have already paid for it! But anyway, i was heading to that studio session today just for fun again when i got a text from Rich saying he'd be heading to the Production Shop, which is this shop that sells stuff for film work, and was asking if i'd like to come... I wasn't about to miss out so i skipped the studio and went "shopping" for camera stuff... I definitely wanna be doing what he's doing in half a year's time... hopefully... In a way he's sorta taken me under his wing, he's like my film "sensei"... bit ridiculous... but you know what i mean. He's the one that's been getting me jobs so far, besides the Killian and Tim ones. Anyway, i spent like AUD$60 on some things to get me started on building up my camera assistant's kit. Yay! It's unavoidable, gotta spend some to gain some. So anyway, we spent like 15mins in the little shop and i bought a tape belt, a few different colours of camera tape, some fluoro tape, lens cleaner and lens tissue. Will get my belt whenever i go up to the coast at Atlab (where they process film) in a shop called John Barry (that sells more film stuff). Exciting exciting...

What's not so exciting though, is uni work. HAHA... But i'll get to it. I recently got my Aus film essay back and i'm one of the few (so far i only know one other guy that got a 7) that got a high distinction. So my work's not slipping yet... and i seriously hope it stays that way. From now til about June 5th, i would have to have finished recording the narration, editing and doing post sound on my experimental due on the 4th of June (until further notice), finish my 25min script for film & tv scriptwriting class (i've already started this, just gotta finish it), finish my rotoscoping thing (which i will explain in more detail next time if i remember) and prepare for my Aus film exam on the 5th (the exam questions are already online, just gotta start it, write it up and memorise it). Hmm... lotsa work.

And there might be the occasional film job in between.... See how things go. As it is i haven't worked a shift in 2 weeks and before that i only did one shift after i took a 3 week break due to uni work... But subway's not important and though the extra cash would definitely help me, the experience i gain from being on set is not something money can buy. And though getting paid on film jobs would be good, you can't expect too much at first, gotta put in as much effort as possible, establish good working relationships and good contacts consequently developing a good reputation before you're gonna get anywhere in this industry. And amidst all this hoo-ha, gotta make sure i'm scoring well at uni, get a few Subway hours in, and hope Shannon doesn't feel too neglected.

- tomorrow: like i said, will be seeing my lecturer for a catch up session and he'll point me in the right direction for my rotoscoping project, then at 2.30pm, i have a dental consult with Char's dentist who's now also mine, went to see him last week. We'll be talking about the arrangement for my braces and all that. Haha... Yeah, I'll be a brace face soon.

KEVIN WONG!! About your wedding. Hmm... If i can get a hold of a decent camera, not a video cam, i wouldn't mind filming your wedding at all... But don't expect me to do it in a dress!! Either boardies or jeans. But most likely boardies and a shirt. HAHAHA... Anyway, we'll discuss closer to date :)

OH, before i forget, these are the FEW films i've seen lately, and by lately i mean since my last post til now:

- The Finished People: 6 out of 10. An Aussie film shot in a doco style that is entirely fictitious. But it's content rings true and that's the main message. The actors are actually homeless people and they came up with these stories they want to tell the world. It's eye opening, but don't expect to be entertained, you will be hooked in a different way, and don't expect amazing performances either. Still worth watching though.

- Forgetting Sarah Marshall: 7 out of 10. This is not a film for everyone, if you like crude humour, then you'd enjoy it. I personally found it not too offensive and quite entertaining. I mean, it's a romantic comedy, what do you expect?

- The Black Balloon: 9 out of 10 for this Aussie film about a boy and his autistic brother. Beautifully filmed, well paced and well written. Superb acting too! Definitely catch it if you have a chance. You won't regret it! Was taken by surprise and really impressed.

- Deception: 6 out of 10 because it's not that much of an original story, it's structure is similar to that of Derailed and Derailed was much better in my opinion. This is nothing special, but i must be honest, the trailer got me hooked and so i went to see it.

- Made of Honour: 6 out of 10. Not as funny as expected... Story's nothing new. Another typical romantic comedy. I love watching romantic comedies to get my mind off uni work. So... Watch for light entertainment only. And if you're a Patrick "Dipshit" fan, yeah, go watch it cos this might be the only time he makes it to the big screen.

- Lantana: 9 out of 10. An Aussie film, one of the best i've seen ever! It's almost European, not that Aussie films aren't as good, but they're just different. This is truly terrifically written, all the characters are multi-dimentional, deep and so real. I wrote my Aus film essay on this film as well as Muriel's Wedding. Anyway, this is a must see.... for the acting, story and simplistic way it was film. A triumph for Australian cinema, no doubt.

- Muriel's Wedding: 7 out of 10. Another Aussie film, this is hmmm... how do i put this.... unique. You will never feel the way you feel watching Muriel's Wedding after watching any other film. It's dark, funny, yet dramatic and in some ways profound. You won't know how to feel while watching this.

- Romulus My Father: 8 out of 10. Yet another Aussie film. I read the book over the year end hols last year and really enjoyed it. The film covered the crucial parts well, in other words, structured appropriately. Some people might be thrown off by the jump cuts, but i definitely recommend you read the book before you watch the film. If you don't have time, watch the film itself and evaluate it as a separate text from the book. The film's also beautifully shot, like most Aussie films, and well acted. Love Eric Bana... always... oh wait, except for that stupid Hulk movie he did... Let's hope the next one with Edward Norton won't kill Norton's career and won't be a flop.

- The Boys: 4 out of 10 for me. Fell asleep while watching it in class. Confronting material based on a real rape and murder case awhile ago in Aus. But i didn't like the way it was shot, wasn't that welll written, in my opinion was poorly paced (also too slow) and the acting wasn't that great. Don't know what my lecturer was talking about. She said it blew her away... WELL it blew me to the land of ZZZZzzzzzzZZZZzs. AVOID at all costs!!! I find it funny how this film actually won awards.

Anyway, this post is WAY WAY WAY longer than expected. But i hope i've updated you on what's been going on.

Thanks for reading and thanks for caring!!
