The Internet Thing

Life's been pretty routine so far. I normally go to classes 2 days of 7, work 3 days of the remaining 5 and read up on required texts on the other 2 days.

Anyway, this coming roster week (starting this wed til next tues), i'll be working 4 days cos Navroz is short staffed, mainly because most of the southbank staff are sick. He was going to give me 5 shifts, i.e. 5 days. I managed to negotiate one free day. Not to mention i have the QNFA awards to go to on Saturday night. It's me +1. Initially, i had a bit of trouble deciding on who to take. My first choice was a film student, i would've taken Nad if she were here, but she's not, so i asked Linda, the film and tv society president, a friend i met through Nad, but she's recording sound for a film that night for $600. OMG... good and easy money. But anyway, that option is out. I did think of taking Truls, the Norwegian guy that i was in the same group as last semester, or even David, also a film student, he was my mentor in Foundation last year during first sem, now he's in first year second sem like me, i sorta met him at Foundation, and later we found out we both knew Nad, and normally if we have drinking sessions or parties, I'd see him around and we'd talk about movies. However, these choices were a bit "risky". Don't want to give them and others the wrong impression, if you know what i mean. It's not that i don't find them attractive or anything and it's not like we don't get along, it's just bad timing. I'll stop digging myself a hole here...

Anyway, i thought then of bringing a friend along from the usual gang, and narrowed it down to three: Kannan, Yuka, Shairah. Yuka still lives at Carseldine, way too far away for her to come down here for a little awards presentation and after party, it would be great to hang out cos i haven't seen her in at least 1 and a half months. Shairah... I don't know, i'd rather go with Kannan than Shairah cos Kannan's more likely to watch my back and he's a close friend who would not misunderstand, whereas Shairah is likely to drink a lot and be all crazy. Haha. Not that that's a bad thing, it's just i'd rather not have 2 people be tipsy... and both not being able to take care of themselves.

SO ANYWAY, Kannan's free Saturday night, so he'll be my +1. Dress code is apparently smart casual, whatever the hell that means. I was slightly offended after i sent an email to the lady who contacted me about the tickets for the night if there was a dress code, cos she replied saying it was smart casual, "nothing like the red carpet Oscars or anything". DUH.... I was just asking, i didn't want to under-dress or over-dress, and i've never been to one of these things before... so of course i was gonna ask this question. Partly cos i really wanted her to say "Casual" so i could wear jeans or board shorts, but the "smart" in "smart casual" is just SO much different from the normal casual. HAHA... i'm being sarcastic in case you haven't picked it up, but whatever, i'll find something to wear, but whatever i wear... i'm definitely wearing sneakers... no heels or any of that shit. I HATE HATE HATE heels. They're the most ridiculous excuse for shoes, impractical and uncomfortable. I avoid them WHENEVER possible.

But anyway, back to the title of this post, "the internet thing"... There have been problems with the internet since Daniel got back. My wireless always get disconnected the next morning after i leave it on to download stuff. My guess has always been that he configures the internet setting so that i can't connect via wireless... hence the disconnection. Anyway, he's been doing it for awhile... way before he left for KK for the holidays, and now that he's back, he's doing it even more. It's really annoying too, cos then i have to wait for him to wake up in the morning so i can ask him to "reset the connection", if you're wondering why... it's cos the router's in his room. So anyway, he has been telling me this whole time, since we started sharing the internet, that wireless gets priority over cable (ADSL cable, which he's using) and that every time i download, it's slows his internet down. According to Kannan, this is rubbish, or as he puts it, total BS. OK, fair enough, i understand Daniel is a hardcore World of Warcraft gamer, and me downloading possible slows down his speed a little, which he gets annoyed over and consequently does what he does. It never bothered me much til recently cos he's been doing it a lot more, i have to tell him to "reset the connection" once a day.... FOR SURE.... ONCE EVERY DAY. Kannan has been over many times to try to help me out, he bought an 10m ADSL cable (i approved and paid him back) for me so i "wouldn't slow down Daniel's line if i download". At least that was my excuse for buying the cable and asking to connect to Daniel's router via cable like he is, that way, i won't get disconnected, he would be happy cos my downloads wouldn't slow him down cos wireless "gets priority over cable" (even though it's bullshit), but the real reason is that i'm sick of feeling guilty for downloading and getting disconnected from the internet at least once a day.

The next morning, a day after i was on cable (Kannan came to set it up just as Daniel was leaving to go somewhere, Kannan asked permission and Daniel said OK), Daniel told me that he couldn't connect at all with me on ADSL cable WHILE i was downloading. OK. Fair enough. He unplugged my ADSL cable and said "just use the wireless". I called Kannan immediately after, cos i asked him to check if Daniel's internet was working while i was downloading the day before, and he told me it was working fine. But I told Daniel what Kannan did (check Daniel's internet connection) and asked if Kannan could come over to "resolve the problem" the next day. Daniel was reluctant, saying he didn't "like all the wires all over the place" and said just to use wireless. But i said i didn't want to slow down his connection by downloading (even though i know it's a lie he tells so i don't download) and that i didn't want to have to wait for him to wake up every morning so i could tell him to "please reset the connection". He soon said "it's up to you." So i arranged Kannan to come in the next day. This time he came with a wireless card as a back up plan if Daniel still didn't want me using cable. As i predicted, he said me using the cable slowed down his internet, so to make him happy and so we'd still be on good terms, i said i'd use wireless with the wireless card Kannan brought. The thing is that this wireless card needs to be configured with a SSID code which on the administrator/host of the internet connection has and knows. In other words, i had to rely on Daniel to configure the wireless card settings, and he refused in a subtle but still obvious way by saying "ah, i'll come do it" instead of giving me the SSID code. Kannan couldn't do anything either, and understood it was an "ego" thing and all about maintaining his "power" over the internet. Daniel wouldn't configure the settings as Kannan said they should've been configured and after walking back and forth from his room to mine to get the SSID code and other codes, Daniel said in an agitated but quiet voice, "can i do this later?", which, to translate (cos i know him so well), means "just use the wireless, no way am i gonna configure this card so you wouldn't get disconnected and so your speed would be constant".

I never asked him to do it again, just cos i know he'd come up with other excuses, and it'd be pointless. So what Kannan suggests is that i get my own internet connection provided that the other phone line in the apartment works. He's looking into the best rate plans available for me cos apparently i'm computer illiterate. Haha... oh well, at least i know he'll pick out the best plan cos he knows the stuff. I've always decided that if i could share internet for as long as possible, i would, just until Daniel has to move out cos Charlene will need to move in, but it seems i have no choice, getting my own internet connection will save the drama and conflict that may arise from this situation and will help our friendship. He's way easier to live with (compared to Shirley) and this internet thing is only a minor problem, so i might as well get my own since i will have to eventually, at least it would save me from agitation, annoyance and confrontation, although it may not save me money.

But before going ahead with anything, i'll have to call and discuss with my parents after i have all the information on which internet plans and rates best suit me, i.e. when Kannan gets back to me with all the info.

Everything's cool. I'm cool. We're cool. And i really want to keep it that way.

That's all for now, like i said, life's pretty normal.

Thanks for reading and thanks for caring!

Woah, so that was the problem. My flatmate is using wire and i'm using wireless. I do sometimes get disconnected for no apparent reason, and i have to turn off my wireless and turn on again on my comp. after that all good. But i have tested before, when i download the same thing from the same website on wire, my speed shot up to 150kbs. When I used wireless, max it went was 50kbs. But i don't download stuff. So im okie with it. oh btw, watch this vid. im sure will bring back some memories.
